Abscess

MSSA/MRSA, S. pyogenes

Abscess WITHOUT Surrounding Cellulitis:

Incision and drainage. Antibiotics may not be necessary unless patient with significant systemic symptoms, concern for inadequate drainage following incision and drainage, immunodeficiency, multiple abscesses, or young age. In patients with these conditions, addition of antibiotics may reduce time to cure.

Abscess WITH Surrounding Cellulitis:

Clindamycin 40mg/kg/day IV/PO div q8h (max 600mg/dose)

OR

​

TMP/SMX 10mg/kg/day (TMP component) IV/PO div q12h (max 160mg TMP/dose)
